Today’s vehicles are equipped with a TRANSPONDER chip that is embedded into the head of the key.  A TRANSPONDER chip is a micro processor that is placed into the head of key.  When the correct TRANSPONDER chip key is inserted into the ignition it communicates with the on-board computer and starts the vehicle.  If an incorrect key is inserted into the ignition the vehicle will not start.

This is the reason why you can’t go to your local home center and purchase a TRANSPONDER key.  All this technology comes with a big price tag.  Dealerships neglect to inform the public of these hidden costs associated with TRANSPONDER technology.  There are two costs associated with duplicating TRANSPONDER chip keys.  The first cost is the TRANSPONDER chip key blank.  And the second is the cost of the special TRANSPONDER equipment needed to program these keys. 

Only a qualified LOCKSMITH should attempt to program your TRANSPONDER equipped vehicle.  Never let anyone attempt to program your vehicle other than a qualified LOCKSMITH.  If the person does not know what he/she is doing they could place the vehicle into a LOCKDOWN mode.  Then the vehicle would have to be towed to a dealer. 
Two things worth mentioning:

1. If your vehicle is equipped with a TRANSPONDER, chip key get a spare key made and put it in a safe place.  This just might save you some day a lot of money and headaches.
   
   
2. Check with a Locksmith to see if your specific vehicle has a TRANSPONDER, chip key and if they can duplicate it for you.  Some TRANSPONDER, chip keys are RESTRICTED to the DEALERS ONLY!!
